National Great Rivers Research & Education Center
2010 Excellence in Design Award Recipient
Project Size: 24,000 sq ft
Project Scope: The most challenging aspect of this project was incorporating all the varying "layers" to the waterproofing system in their proper sequence to allow the drainage and weather protection to perform according to design. The layers consisted of base sheet, fleeceback roofing membrane, protection layer, drainage board, EPS insulation, water retention mat, root barrier, and 12" of growth media. It was a challenge to keep the vegetation portion of the project in line with the natural surroundings while keeping the technical and performance provisions of the roof system intact.
On this project, RSS installed a fully sustainable Carlisle vegetative roof system along with a rooftop observatory platform. The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center officials are currently seeking LEED Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for energy resource efficiency. This project has also been nominated for a 2010 Associated General Contractors (AGC-St. Louis) Keystone Award for performance and design. This project was a great success and the St. Louis team is excited to have been a part of such a sustainable and environmentally beneficial project.
